Canterbury Cathedral has a lengthy and fabled history indeed. It is one of the most renowned structures in the whole of England, having been immortalized in song, books, and the mind of the British people for centuries. It is no surprise that Canterbury has been a very significant destination for a thousand years or more, plus to this day it is a famous destination for pilgrims and tourists alike. History. Along with the nearby St. Augustine’s Abbey and St. Martin’s church, Canterbury Cathedral is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As such it is a wonderful getaway for anyone with an appreciation for previous times, from the casual fancy of an everyday tourist to the specific interests of the skilled historian. Canterbury has served as the seat for the Christian church in England since Pope Gregory the Great sent a mission to the Anglo-Saxon peoples. The man picked to lead this mission, St. Augustine, founded the cathedral at Canterbury in the year 602 AD and became its first archbishop. The initial building is no longer standing, having been reconstructed almost entirely early in the Norman period. The design and style of the current cathedral mainly dates to the 1077 dedication. Under the instruction of Archbishop St. Anselm from 1093 to 1109, the choir area at the eastern end was greatly increased and an enormous and ornate crypt built beneath it. In the course of the long history of Canterbury Cathedral the church has seen baptisms, weddings, and burials of a few of England’s most well known royals, and also its share of scandals and assassinations. Art. Of course, when one considers Cathedrals and artwork the primary thing to come to mind is the ornate stained glass works that are so common. And though the stained glass windows of Canterbury are wonderful and, in some instances, seven or eight hundred years old, the artistic value the Cathedral encompasses much much more. There are elaborate carvings and paintings to treasure and in a sense, the entire building is a thing of beauty. The medieval constructors of these ornate types of Cathedrals were the the very best, and they were all hoping to create a church that would astound and surprise visitors. With the possible exemption of particular palaces belonging to the wealthiest of nobles, cathedrals were the greatest and most ornate buildings in the western world. Music. The modern Canterbury Cathedral takes great pride in its musical programs. It has a professional choir of twelve members: four basses, four tenors, and four countertenors. The Choristers of Canterbury Cathedral are made up of a team of thirty boys whose ages vary from eight to thirteen. The Cathedral holds all of its musicians to the highest of standards, and the audition process is quite exclusive. Concerts and events showcasing other choral groups and orchestras are also held at Canterbury Cathedral, giving a lofty atmosphere to any musical piece. Dover Castle is one of Englands oldest castles and most popular tourist attractions. Tourists can take part in a variety of activities, some of which involve tours of the old architecture, history lessons, and being witness to paranormal activity. Tourists can go to the gift shop, Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment Museum, and castle bistro while touring the facility.
Activities at Dover Castle.
As one of the more popular tourist areas in Kent, the Dover Castle meets thousands of visitors a day. Dover Castle is the oldest fort in England, and guests can find a variety of things to see and do while visiting. The attraction is family friendly, and adults and children can participate in all of the sights and pursuits that the Dover Castle has to offer you.
Historical Importance.
Dover Castle was built in the 12th century and overlooks the legendary white cliffs of Dover. It played a significant protective role throughout history and has often been described as the Key to England. The castle was, originally, made of clay. The castle began to take on an identifiable shape, during the reign of Henry II. Wartime tunnels were also made, and those tunnels were used as an underground hospital, air-raid shelter, and military command centre in the course of World War II. The castle and surrounding land are now owned by English Heritage.
Architecture.
The Dover Castle has numerous distinctive architectural assets that helped to fortify it and guard against attack. The Keep is the inner-most shielding structure, and it is surrounded by the Inner Bailey walls and outer walls. Concrete, antitank obstacles are also there as a reaction to a 1940 threat of invasion. Towers, such as the Norfolk and St. Johns Tower are also present, as is the Constables Gate. Visitors are able to view all of these structures.
Paranormal Activity and Superstitions.
Over time there have been plenty of testimonies of ghost sightings at Dover Castle, some of which contain the ghosts of Lady in Red, Anne Bolyn, Anne of Cleves, and soldiers in the World War II channels. One of the more popular reports is regarding a headless drummer boy who is believed to have haunted the castle for over 200 years. A lot of visitors to the castle have reported seeing a number of different spirits and have expressed they observed bizarre sounds, such as the creaking of a door opening and closing that had long been taken out from that area.
Food.
Tourists can make a day out of going to Dover Castle by visiting the castle restaurant, The Naafi. Visitors can pick up lunch there or bring a picnic to eat outside on the grounds, weather permitting. Another highlight is the Tunnel Caf©, which is located close to the Secret Wartime Tunnels gift shop. Tourists can have a sandwich, cup of tea, or pick up a souvenir, while waiting for their tour to begin.

Due to the credit crunch ski sales fell this season.
Even with strong early sales coupled with first class snow conditions.
These drops in no.s comes after 7 winters of sequential growth in the ski industry, and the numbers went down from 1.15 million in 2008/9 to 950000 last ski season.
This is partly due to holiday makers giving the season a miss, and additional skiers who would normally have 2 skiing holidays, only had one.
A fall of 15% was experienced by the independent travel sector with numerous no frills airlines slashing the no. of routes to some destinations.
Some tour operators saw the numbers falling by about the same amount.
Notwithstanding, the top operators market share continued at a healthy 73% and a France ski holiday retained its position as the top holiday destination with 37% of holidays.
Due to this many tour operators cut down the no. of ski chalets they operate this coming winter.
Luxury catered chalets will surely see a fall in no.s as a catered ski chalet costs the operator more with regards to staff and rental if it is unoccupied.
Therefore it is unlikely that we shall benefit from the last minute deals that were available this season.
And prices are likely to go up, they probably won’t increase substantially.
