I spend a lot of my early time at a poker tournament building a very tight image. By convincing my opponents that I’m a tight player, I’m effectively laying the foundation for a much more loose and aggressive playing style later on in the tournament. When I decide to change up my game and start bluffing and buying pots, having my opponents think that I’m a tight player will make it a lot more likely that my opponents will fold to me.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out this way when I play online poker. Every now and then, I’ll make a bad read and bluff when I should fold. This used to be disastrous for me, because it betrays the tight image that I’d been cultivating all game. Often, I’d get so frazzled once my cover was blown, that I wouldn’t know how to play the rest of the game, and I’d soon be knocked out of the game.
Eventually, I found the answer-instead of losing your mind when your tight image is blown, use your new image to make some cash. Since your online poker opponents are now thinking of you as a bluffer, tighten up again and make a play when you get a winning hand. Your opponents will put you on a bluff and will be more than happy to call your bet, thus fattening up the pot for you.

And this can come in handy when playing poker online. Known as the thereshold of perception phenomenon, this little trick can help you spot tells that you would otherwise miss if you were just focused on polarized signs.
A pro was playing a poker table and watching a guy’s posture (as posture is a huge tell). And he noticed that over the course of a couple hours that a player would be leaning all the way forward if he was bluffing, if he had a draw with a few of outs, he would sit back slightly, with a lot of outs, he’d sit back a little more, and with a monster or the nuts, he’d sit all the way back.
Now to the poker online player this was all unconscious, but to the pro, he noticed the tendency and was able to exploit it simply by depolarizing his tell meter and looking at the threshold of change in a certain player.
